DIY Clingwrap to Kick the Plastic in Your Kitchen to the Curb
For me, the kitchen is one of the hardest places to reduce plastic waste. I would often find myself using a ridiculous amount of Ziploc bags and cling wrap for storing and transporting foods. It wasn’t until The Craft Shop at my University offered a sustainable items workshop, that I knew there were affordable alternatives! One of the items I learned how to make was reusable cling wrap! Keep reading to find out how to make your own.
Materials Needed (amounts are based on one 8x8 sheet):
½ teaspoon jojoba oil
2 teaspoons beeswax (pellets or shavings are the easiest to work with)-
2 teaspoons powdered pine resin-
cotton or other organic fabric
pinking shears
parchment paper
an iron and ironing board
small crockpot/wax warmer
paintbrush
Instructions:
1. Add pine resin, beeswax, and jojoba oil into a wax warmer or small crockpot and set to medium heat. Preheat iron to a low- medium heat.
2. Cut a clean fabric of your choice-the thinner the better- into your desired dimension using pinking shears. This prevents the cling wrap from fraying over time.
3. Lay the fabric on parchment paper and paint the melted mixture onto half of the fabric.
4. Fold the fabric in half and place parchment paper on top of it.
5. Iron over the parchment paper for 15 seconds, then check to ensure that the wax melted through to the other side. If not, brush the mixture in that area then repeat as necessary.
6. Hang dry for 12 hours before use.
Caring for your cling wrap:
Wash with cold water and mild soap between uses. Hot water will remove the wax.
This cling wrap is not recommended for meat products.
Store rolled in parchment paper in a cool, dry place.
